When it comes to skincare, most people have two steps- a face wash and a moisturizer. But did you know that there are 7 steps (some people do more) that you should be practicing? While it sounds like a lot, once you get used to it, those 7 steps will be no biggie.

A 7 step skincare routine sounds like a lot but it can take as little as 5 minutes!

You’re probably thinking, “I don’t have time for that,” but it shouldn’t take you more than 5 minutes. (Ok, it depends- on you, that is. It can take up to 30 if you’re really into it.) Or maybe you already know that there are sacrifices to be made but you’re just confused about the order in which to apply your skincare. Either way, I’ve got you covered. So keep on reading!

*Tip: Before splurging on a 7-step skincare set, ask for samples or buy the travel-size set. You want to make sure the products don’t cause your skin to have a reaction.

Step 1- Cleanse. Using a gentle face wash, apply a small amount, use fingertips to go in a circular motion, rinse and pat dry. I prefer to use colder water than warm.

Step 2- Toner. Don’t skip this step. It can take time to find the right one but this step is essential as it’s balancing your skin, adding vitamins, and more.

Step 3- Serum. I love a good serum. I’ve tried so many I can’t suggest just one. For brightening, a pure Vitamin C serum is my go-to. For ant-aging and a little glow, rosehip oil. There are many different kinds. You just have to find what your skin needs. One of my favorites for nighttime skincare has to be Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Serum.

Step 4- Eye Cream. That area under and around your eyes is super delicate. Don’t try to apply a regular moisturizer onto this area. It’s too harsh and can cause irritation. Invest in a good eye cream and use twice daily- morning and night. Start early- as in your late teens, twenties. This will prevent sagging, fine lines and promotes collagen production around the eyes.

Step 5- Treatments. Ok, we’re now at the point where we need to address any problem areas. Acne? Dark spots? Apply treatment to those areas.

Step 6- Moisturizer. What’s the best way to prevent fine lines and wrinkles? Hydrate your skin! Not only does this help lock in all the other steps but it will keep your skin moisturized. And if you’re even thinking of applying makeup, moisturizer (under primer) will give you a more flawless finish. Ever noticed people with cakey makeup? It’s either cheap or they didn’t moisturize. Don’t be that girl.

Step 7- SPF. If your moisturizer has it, you can skip this one! But SPF is SUPER important for your skin. Not only does it prevent premature aging from the sun but it also protects your skin from harsh UV rays that can cause cancer.

Bonus: Step 8- Lip care. I know I said 7 but I actually do 8 steps and it’s totally worth it. My last step (morning and night) is lip care. I simply apply either a lip mask or lip oil to moisturize my lips. Not only is this essential to do during the winter months but all year round. This keeps lips moisturized and prevents aging and cracking.

Don’t consider skincare self-care.

Skincare is essential. The most common thing I get asked about skincare is where to begin. I highly recommend visiting a beauty counter and sampling or buying a travel-size kit to test out. If you’re very sensitive, consult with your dermatologist to help you find the right fit for your skin.
